Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi Sinha (pronounced [soːnaːkʂiː sɪnɦaː]; born June 2, 1987) is an Indian actress.[2] She is daughter of actors Shatrughan and Poonam. After working as a costume designer in her early career, Sonakshi made her debut in action-drama film Dabangg (2010) which led her to win the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.[3]

Sinha has played the romantic interest of the male protagonists in several top-grossing action-dramas, including Rowdy Rathore (2012), Son of Sardaar (2012), Dabangg 2 (2012) and Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (2014), though she was criticised for taking up roles that offered her limited scope. She received critical acclaim for her portrayal of a woman suffering from tuberculosis in the romantic drama Lootera (2013), for which she was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in 2013. She also received praise for her roles in Akira and Force 2.[4][5]

Early life

Sinha was born on 2 June, 1987 in Patna into a Bihari Kayastha family. Her father, Shatrughan Sinha and her mother Poonam Sinha (née Chandiramani) are actors in Hindi Cinema. Her father is now a political member of Bharatiya Janata Party.[6][7] She is the youngest of three children, her two elder brothers, Luv Sinha and Kush Sinha are twin. She did her schooling at Arya Vidya Mandir and later graduated in fashion designing from Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University.[8]

Career

Debut and breakthrough (2010–13)

Sinha started her career as a costume designer, designing the costumes for films like Mera Dil Leke Dekho in 2005.[9] She made her acting debut in the 2010 film Dabangg, in which she starred opposite Salman Khan. It went on to become the highest-grossing film of 2010 and ultimately emerged as an all-time blockbuster.[10][11] Sinha had to lose 30 kg in preparation for the role as a village girl.[12] Her performance was well received, with noted critic Taran Adarsh noting that “Sonakshi Sinha looks fresh, acts confidently and pairs off very well with Salman. Most importantly, she delivers the right expressions and is not overpowered by the galaxy of stars in the cast.”[13] Although Sinha had no film releases in 2011, she won awards for her debut. This included the Filmfare Award as well as the IIFA Awards among many others.

Sinha had four releases in 2012, her first being Prabhu Deva‘s Rowdy Rathore, opposite Akshay Kumar. The film opened to mixed reviews from critics,[14] although it had a strong opening at the box office,[15] collecting approx. ₹150.6 million (US$2.2 million) on the first day and eventually became a blockbuster.[16]

However, critic Rajeev Masand criticized her ornamental role and wrote that Sinha “seems to exist in this film only to have her midriff repeatedly pinched by Akshay Kumar.”[17] Her next film, Shirish Kunder‘s Joker, also opposite Akshay Kumar, proved to be a trade disaster at the box office and received overwhelmingly negative reviews.[18][19]

Her third film, Ashwni Dhir‘s Son of Sardar opposite Ajay Devgan was poorly received by the critics but proved to be an economic success. Critic Saibal Chatterjee from NDTV noted that Sinha “endeavours to be pretty and dainty amid all the madness.”[20] Arbaaz Khan‘s Dabangg 2, the sequel to her immensely successful debut garnered little praise from critics, though proved to be a major financial success.[21][22][23][24] Sinha also dubbed for the voice of Tooth in the Hindi version of Rise of the Guardians.[25]

Sinha’s first film of 2013 was Vikramaditya Motwane‘s period romance-drama Lootera opposite Ranveer Singh. Despite receiving a lukewarm response at the box office,[26] it and Sinha gathered praise,[27] with Sinha’s portrayal of Pakhi, a Bengali girl who is dying of tuberculosis, receiving universal acclaim from critics. Sarita Tanwar notes that “the star of the film is undoubtedly Sonakshi Sinha [who gives] a mature and refined performance. She lives the character body and soul.”[28] Raja Sen agrees, saying that “Sonakshi Sinha plays Pakhi beautifully, creating a character who is immaculately wide-eyed and possesses casual, yet unmistakable, grace. It is a performance that starts off dreamily soft and turns harder, and she does well-etched dialogue justice like few actresses can. There’s a discernible vulnerability to Pakhi throughout the film, and Sinha brings out this fragility perfectly without ever overplaying it.”[29]

Sinha appeared in Milan Luthria‘s crime romance film Once Upon ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara!, the sequel to Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, in which she was paired with Akshay Kumar again, as well as Imran Khan.[30] The movie was a commercial disappointment and critic Mohar Basu labeled her “a chatterbox replete with idioticity which the director frames as naiveness.”[31] She then appeared in Tigmanshu Dhulia‘s Bullett Raja opposite Saif Ali Khan, a box-office flop. Her final release of the year was Prabhu Deva’s R… Rajkumar opposite Shahid Kapoor. A moderate commercial success, the film and her performance received negative reviews. Taran Adarsh labeled her “repetitive” and noted that she needed to “reinvent herself.”[32]

Recent work (2014–present)

In 2014, after providing her voice for the voice of Jewel in the Hindi-dubbed Rio 2,[33] Sinha was seen in A.R. Murugadoss‘s action thriller Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty, a remake of the director’s Tamil film Thuppakki.[34] Starring opposite Akshay Kumar, Sinha appeared as a boxer. It received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics and emerged as a box office hit.[35][36] Jyoti Sharma Bawa said of Sinha’s portrayal: “Sonakshi has nothing to do much in the film and overacts in places. For an actor who has already proved her mettle in the acting department, this definitely is a downer.”[37] Sinha appeared in a music video with Yo Yo Honey Singh titled Superstar.[38] In July, Sinha jointly bought a team in the World Kabaddi League.[39] Her second release of 2014 was Prabhu Deva’s Action Jackson with Ajay Devgn and Yami Gautam.

She made her Kollywood debut opposite Rajnikanth in KS Ravikumar‘s Lingaa, her final release in 2014. She then appeared in Boney Kapoor‘s remake of Okkadu titled Tevar (2015) opposite Arjun Kapoor.[40][41][42] For the last of these, Rajeev Masand wrote, “Sonakshi Sinha, playing another simpering damsel in another South remake, once again has nothing to do. She appears content showing up for a few dance numbers, and waiting around for a man to save her.”[43]

Sonakshi released her debut single ‘Aaj Mood Ishqholic Hai‘ in collaboration with Meet Bros on 23 December 2015.[44][45]

As of July 2016, Sinha has completed work on the remake of the 2011 Tamil film Mouna Guru, entitled Akira, an action-drama from director AR Murugadoss in which she plays an aggressive college student and Abhinay Deo‘s action-thriller Force 2 opposite John Abraham.[46][47][48] She is currently filming Sunhil Sippy’s comedy Noor based on Saba Imtiaz‘s novel Karachi, You’re Killing Me!. She features in the titular role of Noor alongside Kanan Gill, Shibani Dandekar and Purab Kohli.[49] She is also signed on for Abhay Chopra’s remake of the 1969 murder mystery, Ittefaq, opposite Sidharth Malhotra, and Vipul Shah‘s comedy Namastey England opposite Akshay Kumar.[50]

In March 2017, Sinha announced that she is currently working on a new single. She also confirmed that she will perform as the opening act for Canadian singer Justin Bieber‘s Purpose World Tour concert at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on 10 May, where she hopes to launch her new single.[51]

Philanthropy

Sonakshi Sinha is a professed animal lover, and she had posed for a PETA campaign advocating the adoption and sterilization of dogs and cats.[52] She has starred in a one-minute video PSA, urging everyone to adopt animals and have them sterilised. She has been quoted saying “”Breeders, pet stores and people who don’t sterilize their animals are responsible for all the animals who end up homeless. Every time someone buys a dog or cat from a breeder or pet store, a homeless animal roaming the streets or waiting in an animal shelter loses a chance at a home and a good life.[53]

Anshka Sharma

Anushka_Sharma_Phillauri_promotion_1

Anushka Sharma (pronounced [əˈnʊʂkaː ˈʃərmaː]; born 1 May 1988) is an Indian film actress, producer and model. She has established a career in Hindi films, and is one of the most popular and highest-paid actresses in India. She is the recipient of numerous accolades, including one Filmfare Award from seven nominations.

Born in Ayodhya and raised in Bangalore, Sharma had her first modelling assignment for the fashion designer Wendell Rodricks in 2007 and later moved to Mumbai to pursue a full-time career as a model. Following a successful audition at Yash Raj Films, she made her screen debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in the blockbuster romance Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), which earned a Filmfare Award for Best Actress nomination. Sharma rose to prominence with starring roles in Yash Raj Films’s romances Band Baaja Baaraat (2010) and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012); the latter won her a Best Supporting Actress award at Filmfare. She had her biggest commercial successes with the roles of a television reporter in the religious satire PK (2014) and a wrestler in the sports drama Sultan (2016), both of which rank among the highest-grossing Indian films. Sharma received critical praise for her performances in the crime thriller NH10, which also marked her production debut, and the 2016 romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, both of which earned her several Best Actress nominations.

In addition to acting in films, Sharma is the ambassador for multiple brands and products, and has an active social media presence. She also supports various charities and causes, including gender equality and animal rights. She and her brother, Karnesh Sharma are the founders of the production company Clean Slate Films.

Early life and modelling career

Anushka Sharma was born on 1 May 1988 in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.[1][2] Her father, Colonel Ajay Kumar Sharma, is an army officer, and her mother, Ashima Sharma, is a homemaker.[2][3] Her father is a native of Uttar Pradesh, while her mother is a Garhwali.[4][5] Her elder brother is film producer Karnesh Sharma, who earlier served in the Merchant Navy.[6] Sharma has stated that being a military brat played an important role in shaping her as a person and contributing to her life.[2] In an interview with The Times of India in 2012, she said, “I take pride in saying that I am an army officer’s daughter even more than being an actor.”[2]

Sharma was raised in Bangalore.[2] She was educated at the Army School there, and received a degree in arts from Mount Carmel College.[7][8] She originally intended to pursue a career in modelling or journalism, and had no aspirations to be an actress.[7] After graduation, Sharma moved to Mumbai to further her modelling career.[9] She enrolled herself at the Elite Model Management, and was groomed by the style consultant Prasad Bidapa.[10] In 2007, Sharma made her runway debut at the Lakme Fashion Week for designer Wendell Rodricks‘s Les Vamps Show and was picked to be his finale model at the Spring Summer 2007 Collection.[9] Since then she has done campaigns for the brands Silk & Shine, Whisper, Nathella Jewelry and Fiat Palio.[10] Sharma later said, “I think I was born to emote and act. I would walk down the ramp and smile and they used to say, ‘give us a blank look.’ It was really difficult, not to smile”.[9] Whilst modelling, Sharma also joined an acting school and began auditioning for film roles. Her first role was of an extra in the comedy drama Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006).

Acting career

Film debut and breakthrough (2008–10)

Sharma’s acting debut was in Aditya Chopra‘s romantic comedy Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), opposite Shah Rukh Khan. She took a day to prepare for her screen test at the Yash Raj Films studio and refused to do an impromptu one.[9] She was signed for a three-film deal with the company and landed the leading role of Tani Sahni, a young bride to a middle-aged man, portrayed by Khan. Giving the film a three-and-half star rating, Khalid Mohamed called her “assured and upright”,[11] while Nikhat Kazmi wrote about Sharma’s performance that she “lacks all chutzpah and can barely hold your attention”.[12] The film received positive reviews and was a major commercial success, emerging as the second-highest grossing Hindi film of that year.[13] It earned her the Filmfare Awards nomination for Best Actress and Best Female Debut.[14]

Two years later, Sharma played the leading lady in the crime-comedy Badmaash Company, directed by Parmeet Sethi and co-starring Shahid Kapoor, Vir Das and Meiyang Chang. The film, dealing with four underachieving friends who begin a scam business enterprise, met with mixed reviews.[15] Later in 2010, Sharma completed her three-film contract with Yash Raj Films by starring in Band Baaja Baaraat, a romantic comedy directed by Maneesh Sharma and co-starring debutant Ranveer Singh.[16] Her role was that of Shruti Kakkar, an ambitious middle-class Punjabi girl who starts her own wedding planning business. In preparation for the part, Sharma learned to speak in the Punjabi dialect, which she cited as the toughest part of her role; she described the way the lead characters in the film interact as “crude but cute” which required her to “talk fast, sometimes mix words and even omit words completely”.[17]

Trade analysts expressed doubt on Band Baaja Baaraats financial prospect, citing the middling response to Yash Raj Films’ last few productions, the lack of a male star, and saying that by then Sharma was an “almost-forgotten” actress.[18] However, Band Baaja Baaraat earned positive reviews and emerged a sleeper hit. The film grossed approximately ₹ 214.4 million after five weeks, making it a moderate box office success.[19] Sharma’s performance was praised by critics, many of whom cited it as her best work up to date.[20] Film critic Anupama Chopra praised Sharma and said that she “comes into her own as the ambitious Delhi girl, who dreams of upgrading to multi-crore Sainik Farms weddings”.[21] For her work in the film, Sharma received her second nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.[22]

Rise to prominence (2011–14)

Sharma’s first venture outside of the Yash Raj banner was the drama Patiala House (2011) directed by Nikhil Advani and co-starring Akshay Kumar.[23] The film tells the story of a budding cricketer (played by Kumar) who encounters trouble in convincing his father of his profession; Sharma was cast as the love interest of Kumar’s character. Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com praised Sharma’s work and labelled her a “metaphor for energy”.[24] The same year, she re-united with her Band Baaja Baarat co-star Ranveer Singh and director Maneesh Sharma for the comedy-drama Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, produced by Yash Raj Films. She featured as Ishika Desai, a salesgirl hired to outwit a conman (essayed by Singh), who ends up falling in love with him instead. The film and Sharma’s performance received mixed reviews, with Piyali Dasgupta of NDTV calling her “believable but not endearing”.[25] Despite mixed reviews, the film was a moderate success at the box office.[26][27]

In 2012, Sharma played a supporting role alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif in Yash Chopra‘s “swan song“, the romance Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which marked her fifth collaboration with Yash Raj Films and her second with Khan. She was cast as Akira Rai, a Discovery Channel reporter who harbours an ambition of making documentary films. CNN-IBN‘s Rajeev Masand wrote that Sharma “brings a spark to the film”,[28] however, Raja Sen disagreed and said that “while Anushka can indeed play spunky, she needed here to tone it down several notches”.[29] For her role, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.[30] Jab Tak Hai Jaan went on to become the third highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2012.[31]

Sharma then appeared in Vishal Bhardwaj‘s Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (2013), a political satire set in a village in Haryana. Co-starring alongside Pankaj Kapur, Imran Khan and Shabana Azmi, Sharma played the titular role of Bijlee Mandola, a strong-headed girl who engages in a romantic affair with Khan’s character despite being engaged to another man. The film received positive to mixed reviews from critics,[32] and underperformed at the box office.[33][34] Several critics noted that Sharma was being stereotyped as a loud and loquacious girl; Raja Sen noted that she “is great in a couple of scenes near the climax,”[35] though Kanika Sikka of Daily News and Analysis was more critical and found her “unconvincing”.[36] The following year, she portrayed Jagat “Jaggu” Janini, a television journalist who befriends an alien (played by Aamir Khan), in Rajkumar Hirani‘s religious satire PK. Critic Saibal Chatterjee wrote that Sharma plays “a feisty poetry-loving girl who knows her mind far more than most Hindi film heroines are allowed to” and praised her for “hold[ing] her own” against Khan.[37] The film garnered critical acclaim and emerged as the highest-grossing Bollywood film with a worldwide revenue of over ₹7 billion (US$100 million).[38][39][40]

Professional expansion (2015–present)

In 2014, Sharma established her own production company named Clean Slate Films, whose first release was Navdeep Singh‘s thriller NH10 (2015), in which she also played the lead role.[41] Screened at the 5th Beijing International Film Festival, the film tells the story of a married couple whose lives are endangered after an encounter with a group of criminals.[42] In preparation for the role, Sharma underwent interval training for three months in order to build stamina and remain fit.[43] Writing for NDTV, critic Saibal Chatterjee found the film to be a “taut and riveting thriller” and praised Sharma for “conveying a range of moods as she moves from the vulnerable to the fearless in a battle in which the odds are stacked heavily against her”,[44] and Prarthana Sarkar of International Business Times credited her for “breaking the ‘Miss Bubbly’ stereotype”.[45] The film also emerged as a box office success.[46][47]

Sharma at an event for Bombay Velvet in 2015

In Anurag Kashyap‘s period crime drama Bombay Velvet (2015), (based on the historian Gyan Prakash‘s book Mumbai Fables) co-starring Ranbir Kapoor and Karan Johar, Sharma was cast in the role of a jazz singer, Rosie Noronha. Her character was referenced from yesteryear stars like Brigitte Bardot, Helen and Waheeda Rehman.[48] As part of her preparation, Sharma watched a lot of films of the 1950s and 1960s, as well as a documentary showing the development of hair and make-up over the years.[48] She also revealed to have used temporary lip enhancers as a part of her make up in the film, citing it as the reason behind her changed appearance on a chat show in 2014, and refuting media speculations about her having undergone plastic surgery.[49]

Bombay Velvet was screened at the Locarno[50] and Bucheon film festivals,[51] but critical reviews on it were mixed.[52] Writing for Business Standard, Ritika Bhatia praised Sharma’s performance in the song “Dhadaam Dhadaam”: “she fills the stage with such raw emotion that her mascara-laden tears and fake eyelashes flutter with arresting passion”.[53] However, the film proved to be a box office failure, failing to recover its ₹1.2 billion (US$18 million) investment.[52][54] The same year, she featured in a supporting role of a dancer aboard a cruise ship in Zoya Akhtar‘s Dil Dhadakne Do, an ensemble comedy-drama starring Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh.[55] The song “Pehli Baar” in the film was choreographed by her and Singh; Shilpa Jamkhandikar of Reuters praised their on-screen chemistry and described it as “crackling”.[55][56] Her performances in NH10 and Dil Dhadakne Do earned her Filmfare Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.[57]

Sharma next reunited with Yash Raj Films in Sultan (2016), a romantic sports drama from the writer-director Ali Abbas Zafar. She took on the role of Aarfa Hussain, a wrestler from Haryana who inspires the title character (played by Salman Khan) to take up the sport.[58] Sharma was initially hesitant about the role as she did not have the physique of a wrestler, and researched on different weight categories to “beat people’s perception that all wrestlers are huge.”[59] She was trained for six weeks in the sport, learned to speak the Haryanvi dialect and also interacted with female wrestlers from the state.[60][61] The film, as well as her performance received mixed to positive reviews.[62] Critics were appreciative of her substantial role in an androcentric film;[62] Filmfares Rachit Gupta described Sharma as “the best thing in the film” and noted that [e]ven though she doesn’t have the physique of a wrestler, her spirited performance makes you believe in her tough but emotional character.”[63] However, Suprateek Chatterjee of The Huffington Post felt that she was unconvincing as a wrestler, writing that “she possesses literally zero muscles and somehow always finds the time to get her make-up just right.”[58] With earnings of over ₹5 billion (US$74 million) worldwide, Sultan ranks among Indian cinema’s biggest grossers.[64]

Sharma achieved further success later that year when she played the lead female role of Alizeh Khan, a free-spirited girl who suffers from cancer in Karan Johar’s romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, alongside Rabir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai. Mike Maccahil of The Guardian took note of how much Sharma “terrific spikiness” and her chemistry with Kapoor helped a mediocre picture.[65] In another typical mixed review, Sweta Kaushal of Hindustan Times praised Sharma’s empowered female lead.[66] The film earned over ₹2 billion (US$30 million) worldwide, and Sharma received a Best Actress nomination at the 62nd Filmfare Awards.[67][68][69] With two top-grossing films in 2016, Bollywood Hungama ranked Sharma as the most successful Bollywood actress of the year.[70]

Upcoming projects

As of February 2017, Sharma has completed work on her next production venture, Phillauri, a romantic comedy featuring Sharma alongside Diljit Dosanjh and Suraj Sharma.[71][72] She is filming for Imtiaz Ali‘s romance The Ring, which will mark her third collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan.[73] In addition, Sharma has committed to appear in the comedy Kaneda, alongside Arjun Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh, and has shot a cameo appearance for Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic on the actor Sanjay Dutt, entitled Dutt.[74][75]

Personal life and off-screen work

As of September 2014, Sharma is pursuing a Master of Economics degree through correspondence.[76] She started practising vegetarianism in 2015. The Times of India has listed her as one of “Bollywood’s hottest vegetarian celebrities”.[77] She was also named as the “hottest vegetarian of 2015” by PETA .[78] She is an avid practitioner of Transcendental Meditation.[6] Sharma has confessed to being a victim of anxiety disorder and seeking treatment for it.[79] As of September 2015, Sharma is in a relationship with cricketer Virat Kohli.[80][81] Their relationship has attracted substantial media coverage in India, though she is reluctant to openly talk about it.[82][83]

A practicing Hindu, Sharma along with her family is a follower of ‘Anant Dham Atmabodh Ashram’ in Haridwar.[84] The ashram is headed by Maharaj Anant Baba, who is her family’s spiritual guru and the actress is a regular visitor to the ashram.[85]

In September 2013, Sharma participated and walked the ramp in a fashion show that was held in memory of the late filmmaker, Yash Chopra.[86] She participated in the opening ceremony of the 2015 Indian Premier League held at Kolkata, along with other celebrities including Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Farhan Akhtar and composer Pritam.[87]

Apart from acting, Sharma supports a number of charities and causes. She walked the ramp to support Shabana Azmi’s Mijwan Welfare Society, an NGO that helps empower women.[88] In 2013, alongside other Bollywood actors, she pledged to support the education of India’s young girls as part of NDTV’s “Our Girls, Our Pride” fundraiser.[89] That same year, she appeared alongside other celebrities in a commercial, produced by the National Film Development Corporation of India, to create awareness about the ‘Right to Education’ for children.[90] In December 2014, Sharma auctioned the leather jacket she wore in Jab Tak Hai Jaan on eBay, with proceeds going to the redevelopment of the flood-ravaged states of Kashmir and Assam.[91] Sharma had also fronted a campaign to collect donations for the victims of the April 2015 Nepal earthquake.[92][93] She supports the annual Mumbai Film Festival, and donated money in its cause in 2015.[94] Sharma has been vocal about the disparity in the pay that actresses command, in comparison with their male counterparts in the film industry.[95][96] In 2016, she supported India’s first transgender band, the 6-Pack Band (initiated by Y-Films), by providing a voice over in their first single, “Hum Hain Happy.”[97]

Sharma has also spoken up for animal rights on social media. In April 2014, she took to Twitter to ask for a ban on horse-drawn carriages in Mumbai.[98] In June 2015, she condemned the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China, and urged her fans to sign an online petition aimed at stopping it.[99] In October 2015, she launched ‘Pawsitivity’, a campaign aimed at sensitising people about the adverse effects of noise, air, water and soil pollution on animals. She said, “Animals make the world a better place and it is our responsibility to be sensitive towards them as they don’t have a voice.”[100]

Priya Gupta of The Times of India has said that “the best part of [Sharma’s] stardom is that she does not have the trappings of a star.”[101] Kalpana Nair of Firstpost stated: “actresses like Sharma command the respect they do in a largely conservative and male-dominated industry and the fact that their fan base grows when they take on roles that are not conventional is good reason for us to beam widely and walk with a spring in our step”.[102] Samar Srivastava, writing for Forbes, called her “unafraid”, and added: “you would be hard-pressed to associate Sharma with the stereotype of a mainstream leading lady.”[103] The Times of India published that “..she never shies away from putting [her opinion] across.”[104]

Shruti Hassan

ShrutiHaasanTeachAIDS_Interview2Shruti Hassan At Interview.

Shruti Haasan (born 28 January 1986)[3] is an Indian film actress and singer who works predominantly in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi language films. Born to the prominent Haasan family, she is the daughter of actor Kamal Haasan and Sarika Thakur. Through her successful career, she has received three Filmfare Awards and has established herself as one of the leading actresses of South Indian cinema.[4]

As a child artist, she sang in films and appeared in a guest role in her father’s Hey Ram (2000), before making her adult acting debut in the unsuccessful 2009 Bollywood film , the drama thriller film Luck. She later went on to win critical acclaim for her role in the Walt Disney fantasy film in Telugu, Anaganaga O Dheerudu (2011), Oh My Friend (2011) and her Tamil debut 7aum Arivu (2011). After several successful films like Gabbar Singh (2012), Race Gurram (2014), Vedalam (2015) Srimanthudu (2015), and Singam 3 (2017) , she established herself as one of the leading contemporary actress in Tamil and Telugu cinema. In a recent poll conducted by the Chennai Times, Haasan topped the list of most desirable women.[5] Alongside appearing in Tamil and Telugu films, she has also appeared in several commercially successful Hindi films, including Ramaiya Vastavaiya (2013) and Gabbar Is Back (2015).

In addition to acting, Haasan has also continued her stint in music through work as a singer in Indian languages and has become an established playback singer in India. For her songs, she has received Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer – Tamil and the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer – Telugu nominations for the songs “Kannazhaga Kaalazhaga” from the film 3 (2012), “Yeandi Yeandi” from the film Puli (2015) and “Junction Lo” from the film Aagadu (2014). She began her career as a music director with her father’s production Unnaipol Oruvan and her own music band and album.

Early life

Haasan was born to actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika Thakur in Chennai. Her father is an Iyengar while her mother Sarika was born to a Maharashtrian father and Rajput mother. [6] [7] Her younger sister Akshara Haasan represents India nationally for Ballroom Latin dancing.[8] Haasan studied at Abacus Montessori School in Chennai and moved to Mumbai to study psychology at St. Andrew’s College.[9]

Haasan focused on cinema and music, and eventually traveled to the USA to continue to learn music at the Musicians Institute in California, before returning to Chennai.[10]

Career

2009–2011: Debut and early career

The Haasans: Akshara, Kamal and Shruti

Haasan’s first appearance in a feature film was a cameo role as the daughter of Vallabhbhai Patel in the Tamil-Hindi bilingual Hey Ram, based on a murder attempt of Mahatma Gandhi, directed by her father Kamal Haasan. After rejecting prominent film offers, most notably the lead role in Venkat Prabhu‘s Saroja, reports suggested in late 2007 that Haasan was set to make her actual acting debut in 2008 with a film opposite Madhavan directed by Nishikanth Kamat.[11] Despite Madhavan admitting that the news “was premature”,[12] she eventually did sign up to the film, which was titled Endrendrum Punnagai,[13] only to be stalled prior to production.[14]

Haasan eventually signed up to feature in Soham Shah’s Hindi film Luck opposite Imran Khan in July 2008, and shot for the film for nearly a year.[15] Imran Khan, her childhood friend, had recommended her name to the director and Haasan signed on after listening to the entire script and accepted to play a dual role in the action film.[16] Shruti took part in action scenes during filming, while she also worked out to get a toned body for a sequence in which she appears in a bikini in the film.[17] The film opened in July 2009 to unanimously poor reviews from critics and took a poor opening at the box office, with critics stating that she “deserved a better launch vehicle”.[18] Reviewers were critical of her performance with Rajeev Masand of IBN stating that she delivers “dialogues with deadpan expressions”, while another critic added that she is perhaps”synthetic and fails to impress”.[19][20] Haasan then went on to appear alongiside Blaaze in the promotional videos for Unnaipol Oruvan and Eenadu, the bilingual films starring her father, which she had composed the music for. She made a further appearance in a promotional video for the horror film Hisss starring Mallika Sherawat, where she had also sung a song composed by Dave Kushner.[21]

She made her Telugu debut in January 2011, acting opposite Siddharth in the fantasy adventure film Anaganaga O Dheerudu directed by Prakash Kovelamudi son of director K. Raghavendra Rao. The film, co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures, saw Shruti play a gypsy woman whose life coincides with a task that a blind swordsman, played by Siddharth.[22] The film opened to positive reviews, with her performance being praised with a critic noting “Shruti looks quite attractive and makes a wonderful screen presence,” while a reviewer from Rediff.com wrote that she “looks beautiful and has a mystical aura about her”.[23][24] The film however became a commercial failure at the box office, and the film failed to capitalize on a hefty promotional campaign that had been undertaken.

Her second Hindi feature film, Madhur Bhandarkar‘s romantic comedy Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji, saw her appear in an extended guest appearance alongside an ensemble cast of Emraan Hashmi, Ajay Devgn and Shazahn Padamsee. The film portrayed her as Nikki Narang, the step-daughter of an ex Miss India model, with Hashmi’s character falling for both mother and daughter.[25] Shruti’s performance gained poor responses from critics with a reviewer citing that her character has been “reduced to post-interval surfacing, last-ditch glamour” whilst another labelled hers as “so fake that she offers only disappointment”;[26] however the film went on to become a commercial success at the box office.[27]

In mid-2010, Shruti was signed by A. R. Murugadoss to star opposite Suriya in his next film 7aum Arivu, and the film’s shoot began in June later that year.[28] The director signed after he felt she looked the part of the scientist, mentioning that she seemed “intelligent and beautiful”.[29] Shruti played Subha Srinivasan, a young scientist in the film, who hopes to re-activate the genes of 5th century Buddhist monk Bodhidharma and her performance in the film won appreciation from critics. The film opened to mixed reviews, but became commercially successful.[30][31] A critic from The Hindu noted “rarely is a heroine given near-equal footing in Tamil films,” describing her as “ravishing but that she ought to work harder on spontaneity, and fine-tune her Tamil accent”, but concluded “the point is the actor shows promise”.[32] Her next Telugu release was Oh My Friend, a romantic comedy film alongside Siddharth again, which also co-starred Hansika Motwani and Navdeep. The film told the story of childhood friends and that of their platonic friendship that went on in their adulthood as well and for the role Shruti Haasan went on to learn the dance of Kuchipudi.[33] The film opened to average reviews with several critics claiming the film evoked a sense of “déjà vu”, though a reviewer noted “Shruti, on her part displays the same conviction.”[34]

(2012–2014): Success and recent work

Shruti Haasan was next seen in Aishwarya Dhanush‘s directorial debut 3, a romantic drama film co-starring Dhanush. Aishwarya revealed that she had written the script with Shruti Haasan in mind but date problems meant that the film began its shoot with Amala Paul instead. However, in a turn of events, Shruti was re-signed to play the character of Janani, and the film gained much hype prior to release due to the collaboration of herself and Aishwarya, being the daughters of the two leading contemporary Tamil actors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth as did the success of the song “Why This Kolaveri Di?”. The film opened in March 2012 to positive reviews with a critic noting “Shruti Hassan has come a long way,”[35] though the film only garnered average returns at the box office. Her second release in 2012 was Harish Shankar‘s Telugu film Gabbar Singh, a remake of the 2010 Hindi film Dabangg, with the version featuring her alongside Pawan Kalyan. Shruti had signed the film in November 2011 replacing Ileana D’Cruz who had opted out, and played the role of Bhagyalakshmi, a village girl, which had been played by Sonakshi Sinha in the original version. The film went on to become a major commercial success at the box office and brought in more film offers for Haasan.[36] Critics also gave her performance a favourable verdict citing that she “justifies her role” and “though she didn’t have much of a role, she has left her mark.”[37][38]

In 2013, she appeared in the Telugu action film Balupu opposite Ravi Teja, which eventually became a “super hit” at the Indian box office.[39] Haasan mainly received positive reviews for her performance, with critics noting that she “provides the fun in the film with glamor and verve”.[40] Later that year, Haasan made a comeback to Hindi films, with Prabhu Deva‘s Ramaiya Vastavaiya and Nikhil Advani‘s D-Day.[41] The films emerged as moderate successes and Haasan received generally positive reviews for her performances.

Her first release of 2014, the Telugu film Yevadu opposite Ram Charan Teja, emerged as a major commercial success. Her second Telugu release of the year, Race Gurram, had Haasan star opposite Allu Arjun for the first time in her career. The film was released on 11 April 2014, and eventually emerged as a “blockbuster” success. Along with the rest of the film, Haasan received positive reviews for her performance, with one critic noting that she “plays her part well and looks glamorous”.[42] Haasan also had a Tamil release Poojai opposite Vishal and performed her first item number in her career in the Telugu action comedy film Aagadu featuring Mahesh Babu and Tamannaah in the lead roles.

2015–present

Haasan performed her second item number in Hindi film Tevar featuring Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha. Next she had two HIndi releases Gabbar is Back opposite Akshay Kumar,[43] and Anees Bazmee‘s comedy Welcome Back opposite John Abraham, Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar. She completed filming for Tigmanshu Dhulia‘s drama Yaara opposite Devshakti Swain, Amit Sadh and Irrfan Khan[44] and Rocky Handsome opposite John Abraham.[45] She also had two releases in Tamil namely Puli co-starring Vijay and Vedhalam opposite Ajith Kumar marking her first collaboration with the actor. She also a had one Telugu release Srimanthudu starring opposite Mahesh Babu.

In early September 2015 she started working in S3 with Suriya for the second time.[46] and in mid November 2015 she signed another Telugu film Premam opposite Naga Chaitanya.[47]

Other work

Singing

Shruti Haasan sang her first song aged just six in her father’s Thevar Magan in the composition of Ilaiyaraaja. While in school, Haasan made her singing debut in the Hindi language film, Chachi 420, singing a duet with her father who also directed the film.[48] Shruti sang the bilingual versions of the title theme, Rama Rama with her father, in Hindi and in Tamil for the movie Hey Ram. The album from Ilayaraaja, which was critically praised, won Haasan accolades for her efforts with Screen India saying that she “has the makings of a good singer, and with some training she should go great guns.”[49]

Shruti sang along with veteran singer K. J. Yesudas for the film En Mana Vaanil (2002) under Ilaiyaraaja’s music. She has sung for Gautham Menon‘s Vaaranam Aayiram under the composition of Harris Jayaraj. As of November 2008, Haasan is also midway through her untitled debut album, which she has composed, written and sung, and is set for release in mid-2009.[50] A further song was recorded with her voice for her Hindi film, Luck.

In September 2010, Haasan collaborated with Dave Kushner for the film, Hisss.[51][52] Whilst Kushner composed the track, Shruti wrote the lyrics, sang and appeared in a promotional video for the film.[53] She recently lent her voice for a Telugu film Aagadu which was confirmed by director Srinu Vytla via Twitter .[54]

Music composing

After much speculation, Shruti Haasan was finalized as the music composer of the Tamil film Unnaipol Oruvan, which was released in 2009.[55] The bilingual was a remake of the successful Hindi film, A Wednesday!. The soundtracks of both the projects are separate. Apart from this, Shruti is also the vocalist of an alternative rock band The Extramentals.

Brand endorsements

Shruti Haasan was signed as a brand ambassador for electrical appliances company Lloyd.[56] She also endorses Emami Navratna cool talc.[57]

Emma Watson

c

Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson (born 15 April 1990)[4] is a British actress, model, and activist. Born in Paris and brought up in Oxfordshire, Watson attended the Dragon School and trained as an actress at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts. She rose to prominence after landing her first professional acting role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, having acted only in school plays previously.[5] Watson appeared in all eight Harry Potter films from 2001 to 2011, earning worldwide fame, critical accolades, and more than £10 million.[6]

Watson continued to work outside of the Harry Potter films, lending her voice to The Tale of Despereaux (2008) and appearing in the 2007 television adaptation of the novel Ballet Shoes. Since then, she has taken on starring roles in The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) and The Bling Ring (2013), made a brief appearance as an exaggerated version of herself in This Is the End (2013),[7] and portrayed the title character’s adopted daughter in Noah (2014).[8] In 2017, she portrayed Belle in a live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast.

From 2011 to 2014, Watson split her time between working on film projects and continuing her education, studying at Brown University and Worcester College, Oxford and graduating from Brown with a bachelor’s degree in English literature in May 2014.[9] Her modelling work has included campaigns for Burberry and Lancôme.[10][11] As a fashion consultant, she helped create a line of clothing for People Tree.[12] She was honoured by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2014, winning for British Artist of the Year.[13] That same year, she was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and helped launch the UN Women campaign HeForShe, which calls for men to advocate gender equality.[14]

Early life

Watson was born in Paris, France, the daughter of English lawyers Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson.[4][15][16] Watson lived in Paris until the age of five. Her parents separated when she was young; following their divorce, Watson moved back to England to live with her mother in Oxfordshire while spending weekends at her father’s house in London.[4][17] Watson has stated that she speaks some French, though “not as well” as she used to.[18] After moving to Oxford with her mother and brother, she attended the Dragon School in Oxford, remaining there until 2003.[4] From the age of six, she wanted to become an actress,[19] and trained at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts, a part-time theatre school where she studied singing, dancing, and acting.[20]

By the age of ten, Watson had performed in various Stagecoach productions and school plays, including Arthur: The Young Years and The Happy Prince,[21] but she had never acted professionally before the Harry Potter series. Following the Dragon School, Watson moved on to Headington School.[4] While on film sets, she and her peers were tutored for up to five hours a day.[22] In June 2006, she took GCSE school examinations in ten subjects, achieving eight A* and two A grades.[4][23]

Career

1999–2003: Beginnings and breakthrough

In 1999, casting began for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (released as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States), the film adaptation of British author J. K. Rowling‘s best-selling novel. Casting agents found Watson through her Oxford theatre teacher, and producers were impressed by her confidence. After eight auditions, producer David Heyman told Watson and fellow applicants Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint that they had been cast for the roles of the schoolfriends Hermione Granger, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, respectively. Rowling supported Watson from her first screen test.[19]

The release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001 was Watson’s debut screen performance. The film broke records for opening-day sales and opening-weekend takings and was the highest-grossing film of 2001.[24][25] Critics praised the performances of the three leads, often singling out Watson for particular acclaim; The Daily Telegraph called her performance “admirable”,[26] and IGN said she “stole the show”.[27] Watson was nominated for five awards for her performance in Philosopher’s Stone, winning the Young Artist Award for Leading Young Actress.[28]

A year later, Watson again starred as Hermione in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second instalment of the series. Reviewers praised the lead actors’ performances. The Los Angeles Times said Watson and her peers had matured between films,[29] while The Times criticised director Chris Columbus for “under-employing” Watson’s hugely popular character.[30] Watson received an Otto Award from the German magazine Bravo for her performance.[31]

2004–2011: Continued success with Harry Potter and other roles

In 2004, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was released. Watson was appreciative of the more assertive role Hermione played, calling her character “charismatic” and “a fantastic role to play”.[32] Although critics panned Radcliffe’s performance, labelling him “wooden”, they praised Watson; The New York Times lauded her performance, saying “Luckily Mr. Radcliffe’s blandness is offset by Ms. Watson’s spiky impatience. Harry may show off his expanding wizardly skills … but Hermione … earns the loudest applause with a decidedly unmagical punch to Draco Malfoy‘s deserving nose.”[33] Although Prisoner of Azkaban proved to be the lowest-grossing Harry Potter film of the entire series, Watson’s personal performance won her two Otto Awards and the Child Performance of the Year award from Total Film.[34][35]

With Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), both Watson and the Harry Potter film series reached new milestones. The film set records for a Harry Potter opening weekend, a non-May opening weekend in the US, and an opening weekend in the UK. Critics praised the increasing maturity of Watson and her teenage co-stars; The New York Times called her performance “touchingly earnest”.[36] For Watson, much of the humour of the film sprang from the tension among the three lead characters as they matured. She said, “I loved all the arguing. … I think it’s much more realistic that they would argue and that there would be problems.”[37] Nominated for three awards for Goblet of Fire, Watson won a bronze Otto Award.[38][39] Later that year, Watson became the youngest person to appear on the cover of Teen Vogue,[40] an appearance she reprised in August 2009.[41] In 2006, Watson played Hermione in The Queen’s Handbag, a special mini-episode of Harry Potter in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II‘s 80th birthday.[42]

Watson at the premiere of Half-Blood Prince in July 2009

The fifth film in the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, was released in 2007. A huge financial success, the film set a record worldwide opening-weekend gross of $332.7 million.[43] Watson won the inaugural National Movie Award for Best Female Performance.[44] As the fame of the actress and the series continued, Watson and fellow Harry Potter co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint left imprints of their hands, feet and wands in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on 9 July 2007.[45]

By July 2007, Watson’s work in the Harry Potter series was said to have earned her more than £10 million, and she acknowledged she would never have to work for money again.[6] In March 2009, she was ranked 6th on the Forbes list of “Most Valuable Young Stars”,[46] and in February 2010, she was named as Hollywood’s highest paid female star, having earned an estimated £19 million in 2009.[47]

Despite the success of Order of the Phoenix, the future of the Harry Potter franchise became surrounded in doubt, as all three lead actors were hesitant to sign on to continue their roles for the final two episodes.[48] Radcliffe eventually signed for the final films on 2 March 2007,[48] but Watson was considerably more hesitant.[49] She explained that the decision was significant, as the films represented a further four-year commitment to the role, but eventually conceded that she “could never let [the role of] Hermione go”,[50] signing for the role on 23 March 2007.[51]

Watson’s first non-Potter role was the 2007 BBC film Ballet Shoes, an adaptation of the novel of the same title by Noel Streatfeild.[52][53] The film’s director, Sandra Goldbacher, commented that Watson was “perfect” for the starring role of aspiring actress Pauline Fossil: “She has a piercing, delicate aura that makes you want to gaze and gaze at her.”[54] Ballet Shoes was broadcast in the UK on Boxing Day 2007 to an audience of 5.7 million viewers, to mixed reviews.[55][56][57]

Watson also lent her voice to the role of Princess Pea in the animated film The Tale of Despereaux, a children’s comedy starring Matthew Broderick, with Harry Potter co-star Robbie Coltrane (Rubeus Hagrid) also starring in the film.[58] The Tale of Despereaux was released in December 2008 and grossed $87 million worldwide.[59]

Principal photography for the sixth Harry Potter film began in late 2007, with Watson’s part being filmed from 18 December to 17 May 2008.[60][61] Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince premiered on 15 July 2009,[62] having been delayed from November 2008.[63] With the lead actors now in their late teens, critics were increasingly willing to review them on the same level as the rest of the film’s all-star cast, which the Los Angeles Times described as “a comprehensive guide to contemporary UK acting”.[64] The Washington Post felt Watson to have given “[her] most charming performance to date”,[65] while The Daily Telegraph described the lead actors as “newly liberated and energised, eager to give all they have to what’s left of the series”.[66] In December 2008, Watson stated she wanted to go to university after she completed the Potter series.[67]

Watson’s filming for the final instalment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, began on 18 February 2009[68] and ended on 12 June 2010.[69] For financial and scripting reasons, the original book was divided into two films which were shot consecutively.[70][71] Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 was released in November 2010 while the second film was released in July 2011.

She also appeared in a music video for One Night Only, after meeting lead singer George Craig at the 2010 Winter/Summer Burberry advertising campaign. The video, “Say You Don’t Want It“, was screened on Channel 4 on 26 June 2010 and released on 16 August.[72] In her first post-Harry Potter film, Watson appeared in 2011’s My Week with Marilyn as Lucy, a wardrobe assistant who is flirted with by the main character, Colin Clark, and has a few dates with him.[73][74]

2012–present

In May 2010, Watson was reported to be in talks to star in a film adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower.[75] Filming began in summer 2011, and the film was released in September 2012.[76]

In The Bling Ring (2013), Watson stars as Nicki. The film is based on the real-life Bling Ring robberies, with Watson playing a fictionalised version of Alexis Neiers, a television personality who was one of seven teenagers involved in the robberies. While the film mostly received mixed reviews, critics gave almost unanimous praise for Watson’s portrayal of Nicki in the film. Watson also had a supporting role in the apocalyptic comedy This Is the End (2013), in which she, Seth Rogen, James Franco and many others played “exaggerated versions of themselves”[7] and Watson memorably dropped the “f-bomb“.[77] She said she could not pass up the opportunity to make her first comedy and “work with some of the best comedians … in the world right now”.[78]

In June 2012, Watson was confirmed for the role as Ila in Darren Aronofsky‘s Noah, which began filming the following month, and was released in March 2014.[8] In March 2013, it was reported that Watson was in negotiations to star as the title character in a live-action Disney adaptation of Cinderella.[79] Kenneth Branagh was attached to direct the adaptation, while Cate Blanchett had reportedly agreed to play the evil stepmother. Watson was offered the role, but turned it down because she did not resonate with the character.[80][81]

Watson was attached in 2012 to the role of Emma Forrest in a film adaptation of her memoir Your Voice in My Head. At the time, Harry Potter director David Yates was attached. In a May 2013 interview, it appeared that Watson was no longer attached as the film’s star. Stanley Tucci stated that the role would instead be played by Emily Blunt.[82] However, by September 2013, it was confirmed that Watson was once again involved in the production in the role of Forrest and that filming would begin in November that year with a new director, Francesca Gregorini.[83]

As of June 2013, Watson is set to work with Harry Potter producer David Heyman for her next film Queen of the Tearling, based on a yet-to-be-released book trilogy. She will lead the film as heroine Kelsea Glynn as well as being an executive producer.[84] Warner Bros. will distribute the film.[85] It was reported in September 2013 that Watson would star in While We’re Young, the film adaptation of Adena Halpern‘s 2010 novel 29, which focuses on a young-at-heart grandmother who would rather spend time with her granddaughter (Watson) than her daughter. The film was directed by Stephen Chbosky, with whom Watson had collaborated on The Perks of Being a Wallflower.[86]

In October 2013, Watson was chosen as the Woman of the Year by British GQ.[87] That same month she was one of two British actors to land atop a readers’ poll of the sexiest movie stars of 2013, beating Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence for the actresses’ title in an online poll of more than 50,000 film fans. Benedict Cumberbatch took the men’s vote.[88]

Watson joined Judi Dench, Robert Downey Jr., Mike Leigh, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Mark Ruffalo as recipients of the 2014 Britannia Awards, presented on 30 October in Los Angeles. Watson won for British Artist of the Year and dedicated her award to Millie, her pet hamster who died as Watson filmed Philosopher’s Stone.[13] 2015 releases in which Watson starred include two thriller films; first Colonia, co-starring Daniel Brühl and Michael Nyqvist;[89] and second Regression by Alejandro Amenábar, alongside Ethan Hawke and her Harry Potter colleague David Thewlis.[90][91] Both received generally negative reviews.[92][93]

She played Belle in the 2017 live-action Disney adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, opposite Dan Stevens as the Beast.[94] She sang in the film for the first time, which she has called “terrifying in and of itself”.[95] In 2015, she signed up to star opposite Tom Hanks in the film adaptation of David Eggers‘s novel The Circle as Mae Holland, a young tech worker who takes a job at a powerful Internet corporation only to find herself in a perilous situation concerning privacy, surveillance and freedom.[96] The film, directed by James Ponsoldt, is scheduled for release on April 28, 2017.

In February 2016, Watson announced she was taking a year-long break from acting. She planned to spend the time on her “personal development” and her women’s rights work.[97]

Modelling and fashion

In 2005, Watson began her modelling career with a photo shoot for Teen Vogue and was the youngest star to grace its cover.[2] Three years later, the British press reported that Watson was to replace Keira Knightley as the face of the fashion house Chanel, but this was denied by both parties.[98] In June 2009, following several months of rumours, Watson confirmed that she would be partnering with Burberry as the face of their Autumn/Winter 2009 campaign, for which she received an estimated six-figure fee.[10][99] She also appeared in Burberry’s 2010 Spring/Summer campaign alongside her brother Alex, musicians George Craig and Matt Gilmour, and model Max Hurd.[100] In February 2011, Watson was awarded the Style Icon award from British Elle by Dame Vivienne Westwood.[101] Watson continued her involvement in fashion advertising when she announced she had been chosen as the face of Lancôme in March 2011.[11]

In September 2009, Watson announced her involvement with People Tree, a Fair Trade fashion brand.[12] Watson worked as a creative advisor for the company to create a spring line of clothing, which was released in February 2010;[12][102] the range featured styles inspired by southern France and London.[102][103] The collection, described by The Times as “very clever” despite their “quiet hope that [she] would become tangled at the first hemp-woven hurdle”,[104] was widely publicised in magazines such as Teen Vogue,[105] Cosmopolitan, and People. Watson, who was not paid for the collaboration,[106] admitted that competition for the range was minimal,[104] but argued that “Fashion is a great way to empower people and give them skills; rather than give cash to charity you can help people by buying the clothes they make and supporting things they take pride in”; adding, “I think young people like me are becoming increasingly aware of the humanitarian issues surrounding fast fashion and want to make good choices but there aren’t many options out there.”[104] Watson continued her involvement with People Tree, resulting in the release of a 2010 Autumn/Winter collection.[107]

Watson was awarded Best British Style at the 2014 British Fashion Awards. The competition included David Beckham, Amal Clooney, Kate Moss and Keira Knightley.[108]

Education

Watson at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival

After leaving school, Watson took a gap year[109] to film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows beginning in February 2009,[71] but said she intended to continue her studies[67] and later confirmed that she had chosen Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.[110] In March 2011, after 18 months at the university, Watson announced that she was deferring her course for “a semester or two”,[111] though she attended Worcester College, Oxford during the 2011–12 academic year as a “visiting student”.[112]

Watson told Ellen DeGeneres just before graduation that it took five years to finish instead of four because, due to her acting work, she “ended up taking two full semesters off”.[113] On 25 May 2014, she graduated from Brown University with a bachelor’s degree in English literature.[9] In 2013, she became certified to teach yoga and meditation. As part of this certification, she attended a week-long meditation course at a Canadian facility, in which residents are not allowed to speak, in order “to figure out how to be at home with myself”.[114][115] She told Elle Australia that an uncertain future meant finding “a way to always feel safe and at home within myself. Because I can never rely on a physical place.”[116]

Personal life

While working on the film Noah, Watson was questioned about her faith, and she described herself as a spiritual Universalist.[117]

Women’s rights work

Watson has promoted education for girls, visiting Bangladesh and Zambia to do so.[118] In July 2014, she was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.[14] In September that year, an admittedly nervous Watson[119] delivered an address at UN Headquarters in New York City to launch the UN Women campaign HeForShe, which calls for men to advocate for gender equality. In that speech she said she began questioning gender-based assumptions at age eight when she was called “bossy” (a trait she has attributed[120] to her being a “perfectionist”) whilst boys were not, and at 14 when she was “sexualised by certain elements of the media”.[121] Watson’s speech also called feminism “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities” and declared that the perception of “man-hating” is something that “has to stop”.[119] Watson later said she received threats within 12 hours of making the speech, which left her “raging. … If they were trying to put me off [of doing this work], it did the opposite”.[122] In 2015, Malala Yousafzai told Watson she decided to call herself a feminist after hearing Watson’s speech.[123]

Also in September, Watson made her first country visit as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador to Uruguay where she gave a speech highlighting the need for women’s political participation.[124] In December, the Ms. Foundation for Women named Watson its Feminist Celebrity of 2014 following an online poll.[125] Watson also gave a speech about gender equality in January 2015, at the World Economic Forum‘s annual winter meeting.[126]

Watson took the top spot on the AskMen “Top 99 Outstanding Women 2015” list on the strength of having “thrown her back” into women’s rights issues.[127] The day after she turned 25, Watson placed number 26 on the TIME 100 list of the world’s most influential people; her first-ever appearance on the list. For its recap, former New York Times editor Jill Abramson noted Watson’s “gutsy, smart take on feminism” and called the effort to get men involved “refreshing”.[128]

In January 2016, Emma Watson started a feminist Goodreads book club: Our Shared Shelf.[129] The goal of the club is to share feminist ideas and encourage discussion on the topic. One book is selected per month and is discussed in the last week of that month.[129] The first book to be selected was My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem, who Emma Watson would later interview on 24 February at the How to: Academy in London.[130][131]

Watson was criticised in March 2017 for a photograph published by Vanity Fair in which her breasts are partly visible; some in the news media accused Watson of hypocrisy. Watson was confused by the backlash, arguing that feminism “is not a stick with which to beat other women”, but is instead about freedom, liberation and equality. “I really don’t see what my tits have to do with it”.[132]

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (born October 25, 1984), known professionally as Katy Perry, is an American singer and songwriter. After singing in church during her childhood, she pursued a career in gospel music as a teenager. Perry signed with Red Hill Records and released her debut studio album Katy Hudson under her birth name in 2001, which was commercially unsuccessful. She moved to Los Angeles the following year to venture into secular music after Red Hill ceased operations and she subsequently began working with producers Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin. After adopting the stage name Katy Perry and being dropped by The Island Def Jam Music Group and Columbia Records, she signed a recording contract with Capitol Records in April 2007.

Perry rose to fame in 2008 with the release of the singles “I Kissed a Girl“—which sparked controversy for its homosexual themes—and “Hot n Cold” from her second album, a pop rock record titled One of the Boys. Her third album, Teenage Dream (2010), ventured into disco, and contained the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping singles “California Gurls“, “Teenage Dream“, “Firework“, “E.T.“, and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” as well as the number-three single “The One That Got Away“. The album became the first by a female artist to produce five number-one songs in the U.S., and the second overall after Michael Jackson‘s album Bad. In March 2012, she re-issued the album as Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, which produced the songs “Part of Me” and “Wide Awake“. Her fourth album, Prism, was released in 2013, and is influenced by pop and dance. She became the first artist with multiple videos to reach one billion views on Vevo with the videos for its songs “Roar” and “Dark Horse“.

Perry has received many awards, including four Guinness World Records, a Brit Award, and a Juno Award, and been included in the Forbes list of “Top-Earning Women In Music” (2011–2016). Her estimated net worth as of 2016 is $125 million. She is one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, having sold 100 million records globally throughout her career. In film, she released an autobiographical documentary titled Katy Perry: Part of Me in 2012, and voiced Smurfette in the 2011 film The Smurfs and its sequel in 2013.

Life and career

1984–1998: Early life

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson was born in Santa Barbara, California, to Pentecostal pastors Mary Christine (née Perry) and Maurice Keith Hudson.[1][2] Her parents are born again Christians, each having turned to religion after a “wild youth”.[3] Perry has English, German, Irish, and Portuguese ancestry.[4] Through her mother, she is a niece of film director Frank Perry.[5] She has a younger brother named David, who is a singer,[6] and an older sister, Angela.[7] From ages 3 to 11, Perry often moved across the country as her parents set up churches before settling again in Santa Barbara. Growing up, she attended religious schools and camps, including Paradise Valley Christian School in Arizona and Santa Barbara Christian School in California during her elementary years.[2][8] Her family struggled financially,[9] sometimes using food stamps and eating from the food bank intended to feed the congregation at her parents’ church.[10]

Growing up, Perry and her siblings were not allowed to eat Lucky Charms as the term “luck” reminded their mother of Lucifer, and had to call deviled eggs “angeled eggs”.[11] Perry primarily listened to gospel music,[12] as secular music was generally discouraged in the family’s home. She discovered popular music through CDs she sneaked from her friends.[13] While not strictly identifying as religious, Perry has stated, “I pray all the time – for self-control, for humility.”[14] Following her sister Angela, Perry began singing by practicing with her sister’s cassette tapes. She performed the tracks in front of their parents, who suggested she take vocal lessons. She began training at age 9,[15] and was incorporated into her parents’ ministry,[3] singing in church from ages 9 to 17.[16] At 13, Perry was given her first guitar for her birthday,[3][17] and publicly performed songs she wrote.[9] She tried to “be a bit like the typical Californian girl” while growing up, and started rollerskating, skateboarding, and surfing as a teenager. David described her as a tomboy during her adolescence.[18] She took dancing lessons and learned how to swing, Lindy Hop, and jitterbug.[19]

1999–2006: Career beginnings

During her freshman year of high school,[20] Perry completed her General Educational Development (GED) requirements at age 15, and left Dos Pueblos High School to pursue a musical career. She briefly studied Italian opera at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. Her singing caught the attention of rock artists Steve Thomas and Jennifer Knapp from Nashville, Tennessee, who brought her there to improve her writing skills.[21][22] In Nashville, she started recording demos and learned how to write songs and play guitar.[12] After signing with Red Hill Records, Perry recorded her debut album, a gospel record titled Katy Hudson. She released the album on March 6, 2001, and went on tour that year as part of Phil Joel‘s Strangely Normal Tour.[23][24] Katy Hudson received positive reviews from critics, though was commercially unsuccessful and sold an estimated 200 copies before the label ceased operations in December.[25][26] Transitioning from gospel music to secular music, Perry started writing songs with producer Glen Ballard,[27] and moved to Los Angeles at age 17.[28] In 2003, she briefly performed as Katheryn Perry to avoid confusion with actress Kate Hudson. She later adopted the stage name Katy Perry, using her mother’s maiden name.[29]

In 2004, Perry signed to Ballard’s label, Java, which was then affiliated with The Island Def Jam Music Group. She began work on a solo record, but the record was shelved after Java was dropped.[30] Ballard then introduced Perry to Tim Devine, an A&R executive at Columbia Records, and she was signed as a solo artist. Over the course of the next two years, Perry wrote and recorded material for her Columbia debut, and worked with songwriters including Desmond Child, Greg Wells, Butch Walker, Scott Cutler/Anne Previn, The Matrix, Kara DioGuardi, and Max Martin and Dr. Luke.[31][32] In addition, after Devine suggested they become a “real group”, she recorded with the Matrix.[33] Perry was dropped from Columbia in 2006 as her record neared completion. After the label dropped her, she worked at an independent A&R company called Taxi Music.[34]

Perry had minor success prior to her breakthrough. One of the songs she had recorded for her album with Ballard, “Simple”, was featured on the soundtrack to the 2005 film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.[35] She provided backing vocals on Mick Jagger‘s song “Old Habits Die Hard“,[36] which was included on the soundtrack to the 2004 film Alfie.[37] In September 2004, Blender named Perry “The Next Big Thing”.[35] She recorded background vocals on P.O.D.‘s single “Goodbye for Now” and was featured at the end of its music video in 2006. That year, Perry also appeared in the music video for “Learn to Fly” by Carbon Leaf, and played the love interest of her then-boyfriend, Gym Class Heroes lead singer Travie McCoy, in the band’s music video for “Cupid’s Chokehold“.[38]

2007–2009: Breakthrough with One of the Boys

After Columbia dropped Perry, Angelica Cob-Baehler, then a publicity executive at the label, brought Perry’s demos to Virgin Records chairman Jason Flom. Flom was convinced that she could be a breakthrough star and she was signed to Capitol Records in April 2007. The label arranged for her to work with Dr. Luke in order to add an “undeniable smash” to her existing material.[39][40] Perry and Dr. Luke co-wrote the songs “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot n Cold” for her second album One of the Boys. A campaign was started with the November 2007 release of the video to “Ur So Gay“, aimed at introducing her to the music market.[41] A digital EP led by “Ur So Gay” was later released to create interest.[3][42] Madonna helped publicize the song by praising the track on the JohnJay & Rich radio show in April 2008,[43] stating it was her “favorite song”.[44] In March 2008, Perry made a cameo appearance as a club singer in the Wildfire episode “Life’s Too Short”,[45] and appeared as herself during a photo shoot in June on The Young and the Restless for the show’s magazine Restless Style.[46]

Perry released her first single with Capitol, “I Kissed a Girl”, on April 28, 2008,[47] as the lead single from One of the Boys. The first station to pick up the song was WRVW in Nashville, who were inundated with enthusiastic calls the first three days they played it.[42] The track reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.[48] One of the Boys, released on June 17, garnered mixed critical reviews and reached number nine on the U.S. Billboard 200.[49][50] The album went on to sell 7 million copies worldwide.[51] “Hot n Cold” was released in September[52] and became the album’s second successful single, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100,[53] while topping charts in Germany,[54] Canada,[55] the Netherlands,[56] and Austria.[57] Later singles “Thinking of You” and “Waking Up in Vegas” were released in 2009[58][59] and reached the top 30 of the Hot 100.[53] The Matrix’s self-titled debut album, which Perry had recorded with the band in 2004, was released onto iTunes on January 27, 2009, as a result of her solo success.[37][60]

After finishing the Warped Tour 2008,[61] Perry hosted the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards in November 2008, where she won the award for Best New Act.[62] At the 2009 Brit Awards, she also won the award for International Female Solo Artist.[63] Perry embarked on her first headlining world tour, the Hello Katy Tour, from January to November 2009 to support One of the Boys.[64] On August 4, 2009, she performed as opening act for one date of the band No Doubt‘s Summer Tour 2009.[65] Perry also hosted the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards in November 2009, becoming the first person to host two consecutive ceremonies.[66] On July 22, 2009, Perry recorded a live album titled MTV Unplugged, which featured acoustic performances of five tracks from One of the Boys, as well as two new songs, “Brick by Brick” and “Hackensack”.[67] It was released on November 17, 2009.[68] Perry also appeared on two singles with other artists; she was featured on a remix of Colorado-based band 3OH!3‘s song “Starstrukk” in September 2009,[69] and on a duet with Timbaland entitled “If We Ever Meet Again“, from his album Shock Value II, in January 2010.[70][71] The Guinness World Records recognized her in its 2010 edition as the “Best Start on the U.S. Digital Chart by a Female Artist”, for digital single sales of over two million copies.[72]

“I Kissed a Girl” created controversy among both religious groups and LGBT groups. The former criticized its homosexual themes while the latter accused her of using bi-curiosity to sell records. In response to speculation that her parents opposed her music and career, Perry told MTV that they had no problems with her success.[73] After her relationship with McCoy ended in December 2008,[74] Perry met her future husband Russell Brand in the summer of 2009 while filming a cameo appearance for his film Get Him to the Greek. Her scene, in which the two kiss, does not appear in the film.[75] She began dating Brand after meeting him again that September at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.[76] The couple became engaged on December 31, 2009, while vacationing in Rajasthan, India.[77]

2010–2012: Teenage Dream and marriage

After serving as a guest judge on American Idol,[78] Perry released “California Gurls” featuring rapper Snoop Dogg on May 7, 2010.[79] The song was the lead single from her third studio album, Teenage Dream, and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in June.[80][81] She also served as a guest judge on The X Factor UK later that month[82] before releasing the album’s second single, “Teenage Dream“, in July.[83] “Teenage Dream” reached number one on Billboard in September.[84] Released on August 24, 2010,[85] the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.[86] It received mixed reviews from music critics,[87] and has since sold 6 million copies globally.[88] Teenage Dream would go on to win the 2011 Juno Award for International Album of the Year.[89] In October, “Firework” was released as the album’s third single.[90] It became the album’s third consecutive number one on the Hot 100 on December 8, 2010.[91]

A remixed version of “E.T.” featuring rapper Kanye West was released as the fourth single from Teenage Dream on February 16, 2011.[92] It topped the Hot 100 chart for five non-consecutive weeks, making Teenage Dream the ninth album in history to produce four number one singles on the Hot 100.[93]Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” followed as the fifth single in June,[94] and Perry became the first female artist to achieve five number-one Hot 100 songs from one album when the single topped that chart on August 17, and the second artist after Michael Jackson with his album Bad.[95] For this record, she received an honorary American Music Award in November 2011[96] and a 2013 Guinness World Record.[97] On September 7, she set a new record by becoming the first artist to spend 69 consecutive weeks in the top ten of the Hot 100.[98] In October, “The One That Got Away” was released as the album’s sixth single.[99] The song peaked at number three on the Hot 100[100] and number two in Canada.[55] On February 13, 2012, Capitol released the lead single from Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, “Part of Me“, which debuted at number one on the Hot 100 and became Perry’s seventh single overall to top the chart.[53][101] Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection was released on March 23.[102]Wide Awake” was released on May 22 as the re-release’s second single,[103] peaking at number two on the Hot 100[100] and number one in Canada[55] and New Zealand.[104] On January 5, she was named the sixth best-selling digital artist in the United States, with sales of 37.6 million units according to Nielsen SoundScan.[105] That month, she became the first artist to have four songs sell over 5 million digital units.[106]

Katy Perry performing during the California Dreams Tour

Perry’s California Dreams Tour grossed $59.5 million

Perry embarked on her second tour, the California Dreams Tour, in support of Teenage Dream[64] from February 2011 to January 2012.[107] The tour grossed $59.5 million globally[108] and won her the award for Best Live Act at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards.[109] On September 23, 2011, she performed on the opening day of the 2011 Rock in Rio festival along with Elton John, Claudia Leitte, and Rihanna.[110] In September 2010, Perry was scheduled to appear on the 41st-season premiere of Sesame Street. After her scene was uploaded to YouTube, viewers criticized Perry’s exposed cleavage. Four days before the scheduled airing, Sesame Workshop announced that the segment would not air on television, but would still be available to watch online.[111] Perry subsequently mocked the controversy on Saturday Night Live, where she was a musical guest and wore an Elmo-themed shirt showing large amounts of cleavage during one skit.[112]

In December 2010, Perry played Moe Szyslak‘s girlfriend in the live-action segment from a Christmas episode of The Simpsons titled “The Fight Before Christmas“.[113][114] In February 2011, she made a guest appearance on the How I Met Your Mother episode “Oh Honey“, playing a woman known as Honey.[115] The role won her the People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Guest Star in January 2012.[116] She made her film debut in the 3D family motion picture The Smurfs as Smurfette on July 29, 2011. The film was a financial success worldwide,[117] while critics gave mostly negative reviews.[118] She hosted Saturday Night Live on December 10, 2011, with Robyn as the episode’s musical guest. Perry’s work on the episode received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised her performance in the episode’s digital short featuring her and Andy Samberg.[119] In March 2012, she guest starred as a prison security guard named Rikki on the Raising Hope episode “Single White Female Role Model”.[120] On July 5, 2012, Perry’s autobiographical documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me was released to theaters through Paramount Pictures.[121][122] The film received positive reviews[123] and grossed $32.7 million worldwide at the box office.[124]

Perry began to venture into business when she endorsed her first fragrance, Purr, in November 2010. Her second fragrance, Meow!, was released in December 2011. Both perfumes were released through Nordstrom department stores.[125][126] Electronic Arts recruited her to promote their new expansion pack for The Sims 3: Showtime,[127] before releasing a separate stuff pack featuring Perry-inspired furniture, outfits, and hairstyles, titled The Sims 3: Katy Perry’s Sweet Treats, in June 2012.[128] The following month, she became the spokesperson and ambassador for Popchips and made an investment in the company.[129] Billboard dubbed her as their “Woman of the Year” for 2012.[130]

She married Russell Brand on October 23, 2010, in a traditional Hindu ceremony near the Ranthambhore tiger sanctuary in Rajasthan.[131] Brand announced on December 30, 2011, that they were divorcing after 14 months of marriage.[132] Perry later stated that conflicting career schedules and his desire to have children before she was ready led to the end of their marriage,[133] and that he never spoke to her again after sending a text message that he was divorcing her[134] while Brand asserted that he divorced her due to her commercial success and reluctance to engage in activism.[135] She was initially distraught over their divorce, and said that she contemplated suicide.[136][137] After the marriage ended in 2012,[138] Perry began a relationship with singer John Mayer that August.[139]

2013–2015: Prism and Super Bowl XLIX halftime show

In November 2012, Perry began work on her fourth album, Prism. She told Billboard, “I know exactly the record I want to make next. I know the artwork, the coloring and the tone” and “I even know what type of tour I’m doing next. I’ll be very pleased if the vision I have in my head becomes a reality.”[140] Although she told L’Uomo Vogue in June 2012 that she planned to have “darker elements” in Prism following the end of her marriage,[141] Perry revealed to MTV during the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards that she changed the album’s direction after periods of self-reflection. The viewership was higher than the game itself, which was viewed by an audience of 114.4 million.[164]

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) ranked her fifth on the list of Top Global Recording Artists of 2013.[165] On June 26, 2014, she was declared the Top Certified Digital Artist Ever by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for certified sales of 72 million digital singles in the United States.[166][167] In May 2014, a portrait of Perry by painter Mark Ryden was featured in his exhibition “The Gay 90s”, and shown at the Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles. Influences

During the early stages of her career, Perry’s musical style gravitated towards gospel and she aspired to be as successful as Amy Grant.[197] At the age of 15, she heard Queen‘s “Killer Queen,” which inspired her to pursue a career in music.[198] She cites the band’s frontman, Freddie Mercury, as her biggest influence and expressed how the “combination of his sarcastic approach to writing lyrics and his ‘I don’t give a fuck’ attitude” inspired her music.[199] She paid homage to the band by naming her third fragrance Killer Queen.[177] Perry described The Beach Boys and their album Pet Sounds as having a considerable influence on her music: “Pet Sounds is one of my favorite records and it influenced pretty much all of my songwriting. All of the melody choices that I make are because of Pet Sounds.”[200] The singer also holds the Beatles‘ album The Beatles in high esteem, and described these two albums as “the only things I listened to for probably two years straight.”[201]

Perry cites Alanis Morissette and her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill as a significant musical inspiration, and opted to work with Morissette’s frequent collaborator Ballard as a result. Perry stated, “Jagged Little Pill was the most perfect female record ever made. There’s a song for anyone on that record; I relate to all those songs. They’re still so timeless.” Additionally, Perry borrows influence from Flaming Red by Patty Griffin and 10 Cent Wings by Jonatha Brooke.[202] Perry intends to become “more of a Joni Mitchell“, releasing folk and acoustic music.[203] Perry’s autobiographical documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me was largely influenced by Madonna: Truth or Dare. She admires Madonna’s ability to reinvent herself, saying “I want to evolve like Madonna”,[204] and has credited Madonna for inspiring her to make Prism “darker” than her previous material.[205]

Perry names Björk as an influence, particularly admiring her “willingness to always be taking chances”.[202] Other musicians who Perry has cited as influences include ABBA, The Cardigans,[206] Cyndi Lauper,[207] Ace of Base, 3OH!3,[208] CeCe Peniston, C+C Music Factory, Black Box, Crystal Waters, Mariah Carey,[203] Heart, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Imogen Heap, Rufus Wainwright,[209] Pink,[210] and Gwen Stefani.[202] “Firework” was inspired by a passage in the book On the Road by Jack Kerouac in which the author compares people who are full of life to fireworks that shoot across the sky and make people watch in awe.[211] Her second concert tour, the California Dreams Tour, was reminiscent of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.[212] She also credits the 1996 movie The Craft for inspiring her song “Dark Horse”,[213] and Eckhart Tolle‘s book The Power of Now for influencing Prism.[136]

Musical style and themes

“When I am in between records, sometimes I doubt myself. I’ll be like ‘Did I just get lucky, or did I mass-manipulate the world into thinking that seven songs were worth a number-one position?’ And then I go back into the studio and I start writing, and the true essential oil of who I am comes bubbling back up and reminds me that it’s always been inside of me, that nobody can take this away no matter what comment anyone makes.”

—Perry on her confidence as a songwriter[214]

While Perry’s music incorporates pop, rock, and disco, Katy Hudson contains gospel. Her subsequent releases, One of the Boys and Teenage Dream, involve themes of sex and love. One of the Boys is a pop rock record, while Teenage Dream features disco influences.[215][216] Perry’s fourth album, Prism, is significantly influenced by dance and pop music. Lyrically, the album addresses relationships, self-reflection, and everyday life.[217] Many of her songs, particularly on Teenage Dream, reflect on love between teenagers; W described the album’s sexual innuendos as “irresistible hook-laden melodies”.[28] Self-empowerment is a common theme in Perry’s music.[218]

Perry describes herself as a “singer-songwriter masquerading as a pop star”[219] and maintains that honest songwriting is very important to her. She told Marie Claire: “I feel like my secret magic trick that separates me from a lot of my peers is the bravery to be vulnerable and truthful and honest. I think you become more relatable when you’re vulnerable.”[14] Kristen Wiig commented that “as easy, breezy, and infectious as Perry’s songs can be, beneath the surface lurks a sea of mixed emotions, jumbled motives, and contradictory impulses complicated enough to fill a Carole King record.”[201] According to Greg Kot of Chicago Tribune, “being taken seriously may be Perry’s greatest challenge yet.”[220] The New York Times labeled her “the most potent pop star of the day – her hits are relatable with just a hint of experimentation”.[221] Randall Roberts of Los Angeles Times criticized her use of idioms and metaphors in her lyrics and for frequent “clichés”.[222] Throughout her career, Perry has co-written songs recorded by other artists, including Selena Gomez & the Scene,[223][224] Jessie James,[225] Kelly Clarkson,[226] Lesley Roy,[227] Britney Spears,[228] Iggy Azalea,[229] and Nicki Minaj.[230]

Voice

Perry has a contralto vocal range.[231][232] Her singing has received both praise and criticism. Betty Clarke of The Guardian commented that her “powerful voice is hard-edged”[233] while Rob Sheffield from Rolling Stone described Perry’s vocals on Teenage Dream as “processed staccato blips”.[216] Darren Harvey of musicOMH compared Perry’s vocals on One of the Boys to Alanis Morissette’s, both possessing a “perky voice shifting octaves mid-syllable”.[234] Alex Miller from NME felt that “Perry’s problem is often her voice” on One of the Boys, stating that “somewhere along the line someone convinced her she was like, well, a ballsy rock chick”.[235] Conversely, Bernadette McNulty from The Daily Telegraph praised her “rock chick voice” in a review of a concert promoting Prism.[236]

Life and career

1992–2006: Early life and career beginnings

Selena Marie Gomez was born in Grand Prairie, Texas on July 22, 1992,[7] to Ricardo Joel Gomez and former stage actress Amanda Dawn “Mandy” Cornett.[8][9][10] Gomez was named after Tejano singer and actress Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, who died in 1995.[11][12] Her father is of Mexican descent while her mother, who was adopted, has some Italian ancestry.[13][14][15] Regarding her Hispanic heritage, Gomez has stated, “My family does have Quinceañeras, and we go to the communion church. We do everything that’s Catholic, but we don’t really have anything traditional except [that we] go to the park and have barbecues on Sundays after church.”[16] Gomez’s parents divorced when she was five years old, and she remained with her mother.[8][17] Gomez has two siblings. Her sister, Gracie Elliot Teefey, was born to Amanda and her second husband Brian Teefey on June 12, 2013.[18][19] Gomez has a second sister, Victoria “Tori” Gomez, born to Ricardo and his wife Sara on June 25, 2014.[20] She earned a high school diploma through homeschooling in May 2010.[21]

When Gomez was born, her mother was sixteen years old.[22] The family had financial troubles during Gomez’s childhood, with her mother struggling to provide for the pair.[23] At one point, Gomez recalled the pair had to search for quarters just to get gas for their car.[23] Her mother later recalled the two would frequently walk to their local dollar store to purchase spaghetti for dinner, though got by.[23] Gomez stated, “I was frustrated that my parents weren’t together, and never saw the light at the end of the tunnel where my mom was working hard to provide a better life for me. I’m terrified of what I would have become if I’d stayed [in Texas].”[24] She later added that “[My mom] was really strong around me. Having me at 16 had to have been a big responsibility. She gave up everything for me, had three jobs, supported me sacrificed her life for me.”[25] Gomez had a close relationship with her grandparents as a child, and appeared in various pageants growing up.[25] Her grandparents often took care of Selena while her parents finished their schooling, and the pair went as far as stating that they “raised her” up until she found success in the entertainment industry.[25]

Gomez first gained an interest in pursuing a career in the entertainment industry watching her mother prepare for stage productions.[26] She began auditioning for various roles, meeting Demi Lovato during an audition for Barney and Friends.[27][28] Both girls were later selected to appear on the series in 2002,[29][30] with Gomez portraying the character of Gianna.[31] The show was her first experience in acting, with Gomez recalling, “I was very shy when I was little […] I didn’t know what ‘camera right’ was. I didn’t know what blocking was. I learned everything from Barney.”[32] Gomez appeared in fourteen episodes of the show between 2002 and 2004, though the show’s producers released her as she was getting “too old” for the series.[33] While working on the series, Gomez had a cameo role in the film Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003) and the made-for-television film Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire (2005).[34] With experience now under her belt, Gomez auditioned for roles under the Disney Channel company along with Lovato.[35] Gomez made a guest appearance in a 2006 episode of the Disney series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.[36]

Gomez was given a recurring role on the popular Disney Channel series Hannah Montana in 2007, portraying pop star Mikayla.[37] During this time, Gomez filmed pilot episodes for two potential Disney Channel series; the first, titled Arwin!,[38] a spin-off of the Suite Life series, while the second was a spin-off of the series Lizzie McGuire.[39] She later auditioned for a role in the Disney series Wizards of Waverly Place, ultimately winning the lead role of Alex Russo.[33] Upon receiving the role, Gomez and her mother moved to Hollywood; Lovato and her family also moved to Hollywood, hoping to achieve similar success to Gomez.[40] Wizards of Waverly Place saw Gomez portraying a teenage girl in a family of wizards who own a restaurant in New York.[41] The series quickly became a hit for the network, propelling Gomez to more mainstream success.[42] The series received numerous nominations and awards.[43][44] Gomez recorded the theme song for the series, titled “Everything is Not What It Seems.”[45] Gomez briefly dated fellow Disney star Nick Jonas in 2008.[46] Gomez later appeared in the music video for the song “Burnin’ Up“, which the Jonas Brothers had recorded and released,[47] and later, she also appeared in an episode of the reality series Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream.

While working on the second season of Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez appeared on the Disney Channel special Studio DC: Almost Live alongside various other Disney stars.[48] She contributed a cover of the song “Cruella de Vil” to the compilation album DisneyMania 6,[49] and later recorded the original song “Fly to Your Heart” for the soundtrack of the animated film Tinker Bell.[50] She had a leading role, as an aspiring dancer, in the musical film Another Cinderella Story that same year.[51] The film was released to generally positive reviews, and won the 2010 Writers Guild of America Award for Children’s script-long form or special.[52] Gomez recorded three songs for the soundtrack, and released one of them, “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know“, as a promotional single.[53] Later that year, Gomez had the supporting role of Helga in the animated film Horton Hears a Who![54] The film was a commercial success, and went on to gross nearly three hundred million dollars worldwide.[55] At 16 years of age, Gomez was signed to a recording contract with the Hollywood Records label, which had already signed both Cyrus and Lovato.[56][57] Gomez formed her own production company in 2008, which she called July Moon Productions.[58][59] She partnered with XYZ Films for the project, giving Gomez the opportunity to option articles, hire writers and create talent packages to shop to studios.[60][61] Gomez was slated to release two films under the company. The first, titled What Boys Want, with Gomez as a girl who could hear the thoughts of men.[62] She later announced the film Thirteen Reasons Why, in which she was to play a young girl who commits suicide; ultimately, neither film was released.[63]

Gomez continued to have mainstream success throughout the following year, appearing as Alex Russo in a crossover episode of the Disney series The Suite Life on Deck.[64] She later made a guest appearance on the Disney series Sonny With a Chance, starring Lovato.[65] She appeared in a remix of the Forever the Sickest Kids‘s single “Whoa Oh! (Me vs. Everyone)“, released as a single in April of that year.[66] Gomez, along with Lovato, starred in the Disney Channel film Princess Protection Program, which aired in June 2009. The film was a critical success,[67] and had a total of 8.5 million viewers during its premiere.[68] For the film, Gomez and Lovato recorded the song “One and the Same”, which was later released as a promotional single.[69] She later provided the voice of Princess Selenia in the animated film Arthur and the Revenge of Maltazard.[70] On August 28, 2009, Gomez starred in Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, a television film based on the series.[71] The film premiered to an audience of 11.4 million viewers becoming cable’s No. 1 scripted telecast of 2009 and Disney Channel’s second most-viewed film premiere after High School Musical 2.[72] The film won the series its second consecutive Emmy for “Outstanding Children’s Program” at the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards.[73]

Hoping to achieve a successful crossover into music, Gomez formed the pop-rock band Selena Gomez & the Scene through her record deal with Hollywood Records.[74] The name of the band is an “ironic jab” at the people who called Gomez a “wannabe scene.”[75] The group released their debut studio album in August 2009.,[76][77][78][79] which debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200 albums chart in the United States, with first-week sales of 66,000 copies.[80] The album received a mixed reception, some critics praised the album for its “fun” nature, while others criticized Gomez for her vocal performance.[78][81][82] The lead single failed to have commercial success,[83] however the second single was successful.[84] With heavy promotion through Disney and performances, the song had success on radio and with sales.[85] In 2010, Gomez starred as one of the two female leads in Ramona and Beezus, a film adaption of the children’s novel series by Beverly Cleary.[86][87][88] The film premiered on July 23, 2010, and it was met with generally positive reviews.[89] Selena Gomez & the Scene released their second studio album that same year.,[90][91] which debuted on the US Billboard 200 at number 4 with sales of a little over 66,000.[91] The album received mixed to positive reviews where some noticed that Gomez’s vocals contained the Auto-Tune effect.[92] The record’s two singles both achieved moderate success.[93][94] Having previously announced plans to launch a fashion line, Gomez launched Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez in 2010.[95][96] The collection consisted of, and featured, bohemian dresses, floral tops, jeans, skirts, jackets, scarves and hats, all of which were made from recycled or eco-friendly materials.[97][98] Gomez stated, “With my line, I really want to give the customer options on how they can put their own looks together […] I want the pieces that can be easy to dress up or down, and the fabrics being eco-friendly and organic is super important […] Also, the tags will all have some of my inspirational quotes on them. I’m just looking to send a good message.”[95][98] To design the actual items, Gomez teamed up with designers Tony Melillo and Sandra Campos, both of whom had previously worked with big-name fashion houses.[96] Melillo and Campos teamed with New York-based Adjmi Apparel to manufacture the brand, which was formed by Adjmi CH Brands LLC, the holding company for the brand.[99]

In 2011, Gomez starred in the film Monte Carlo. Her character Grace is teenager “mistaken for a socialite while on a trip to Paris.”[100] To prepare for the role, Gomez learned how to play polo and also took two weeks of vocal training to learn two different British accents.[101][102] She also began a relationship with Justin Bieber that year, which lasted until 2014.[103] Gomez appeared in a cameo role in the film The Muppets[104] and appeared in the Disney shows So Random! and PrankStars.[105] Selena Gomez & the Scene released their third and final studio album that same year.[106] The album received mixed reviews,[106] with the album’s second single receiving a 4x Platinum certification from the RIAA.[107] However, the album’s lead single and last single both achieved moderate success.[108][109] It was announced on July 14, 2011, that Gomez had signed a license agreement with Adrenalina, an extreme sports and adventure-themed lifestyle brand, to develop, manufacture, and distribute the actress’s fragrance. Chairman and C.E.O. of Adrenalina, Ilia Lekach, said, “We are incredibly enthused to be working with Ms. Gomez and will reveal more details pertaining to the fragrance as we get closer to the launch date.”[110] The perfume was released in May 2012.[111]

2012–2014: Solo musical debut and personal struggles

Gomez confirmed in January 2012 that she would be taking a break from her music career, thus placing Selena Gomez & the Scene on an ongoing hiatus.[112] That year, Wizards of Waverly Place officially ended its run on the Disney Channel after four successful seasons.[113][114] Gomez hoped to focus on her film career outside of Disney, and starred alongside Adam Sandler and Steve Buscemi in the animated film Hotel Transylvania (2012).[115] The film premiered at the 37th annual Toronto International Film Festival and was released on September 28, 2012.[115] Gomez had a role in the controversial exploitation film Spring Breakers (2013), starring James Franco.[116] The film saw Gomez in a more mature role than her previous works, and reportedly led to Gomez having a “bit of a meltdown on set.”[17] In 2013, Gomez starred in the film Getaway, alongside Ethan Hawke.[117] The film was a critical and commercial failure,[118] and earned Gomez a nomination for Worst Actress at the 34th Golden Raspberry Awards.[119] She also starred in the Disney Channel special The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex in 2013.[120]

Gomez performing during the Stars Dance Tour (2013)

Despite her earlier claims that she would be taking a break from her music career, Gomez confirmed in October 2012 that she was working on new material.[121][122] She later confirmed that she would be releasing her solo debut album, as opposed to another album with her band.[123] Gomez released “Come & Get It” as the lead single from the album.[124] The single became Gomez’s first top ten entry on the Billboard Hot 100.[125] Stars Dance was released on July 23, 2013. It became her first album to debut at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, where it sold 97,000 copies in its first week.[126] It was Gomez’s first No. 1 on the Billboard 200.[127] The album remained in the top ten in its second week, though declined down the chart in the following weeks.[128][129][130] The record was met with mixed reviews where some music critics noticed her inability to create her own musical identity and her lack of vocal abilities “doesn’t help.”[131][132][133] Gomez incorporated choreography and dance routines into her promotional performances and music videos for the album, feeling inspired by artists such as Janet Jackson and Britney Spears.[134] As of September 2015, the album has sold 392,000 copies in the United States, making it her lowest selling studio album to date in the country.[135] It remains her only studio effort to not receive a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[136]

Gomez embarked on her Stars Dance Tour on August 14, 2013.[137] After touring in North America and Europe, the tour was set to continue throughout 2014, though Gomez cancelled the Australian and Asian leg of the tour in December 2013, claiming that she would be taking a hiatus to spend time with her family.[138] In January 2014, it was reported that Gomez had spent two weeks at Dawn at The Meadows, which is a treatment center in Wickenburg, Arizona that specializes in treating addiction and trauma in young people.[139][140][141] Her representative stated that she had spent time there “voluntarily […] but not for substance abuse.”[142][143] Despite initially neglecting to comment, Gomez confirmed in 2015 that she had been diagnosed with the auto-immune disease, lupus, and that she had cancelled the tour and entered rehab to undergo chemotherapy.[144][145] Gomez appeared in the film Behaving Badly (2014) with Dylan McDermott and Nat Wolff.[146] The project, filmed prior to Gomez’s stint in rehab, was released in August 2014 to a generally negative critical and commercial reception.[147][148][149][150] Even the author of the original autobiographical novel, has disavowed the film.[151] She later appeared in the film Rudderless (2014), the directorial debut of William H. Macy.[152][153][154] The independent film received a mixed reception from critics.[155][156]

In April of that year, it was reported that Gomez had fired her mother and stepfather as her managers; the two had managed Gomez since her career began.[157] Gomez later signed with the WME and Brillstein companies to manage her career.[158][159] The news of Gomez’s new management also fueled rumors that her recording contract with Hollywood Records was ending, and that Gomez was searching for a new label.[160][161] Gomez surprise released her new single “The Heart Wants What It Wants” (2014) on November 6, and confirmed after months of speculation that she would be releasing a compilation album as a means of finishing out her contract with Hollywood Records.[162] The single went on to become her second top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and sold over one million copies in the United States.[163] Gomez released her first solo compilation album, For You (2014), on November 24.[164] The album received minimal promotion and failed to achieve much commercial success, selling 35,506 equivalent album units in the United States during its first week of release, and entered the Billboard 200 at number twenty-four.[165] Gomez officially signed a recording contract with Interscope Records in December 2014.[166]

2015–2016: Revival and hiatus thjoo

While working on her second studio album, Gomez collaborated with Zedd for his single “I Want You to Know” (2015), released as the lead single from his sophomore album on February 23.[167] The single became Gomez’s fourth top twenty entry on the Billboard Hot 100, and received a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[163] Gomez became the face of haircare brand Pantene in 2015.[168] Gomez released “Good for You” (2015) as the lead single from her second studio album on June 22, 2015; the single features rapper ASAP Rocky.[169] The song sold 179,000 copies in its first week of release alone, and went on to become her first top five single on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.[170] The single became her first to top the Mainstream Top 40 chart.[171][172] In August 2015, Gomez appeared in the documentary Unity among many other actors and actresses.[173] She reprised the role of Mavis in Hotel Transylvania 2, which was released on September 25; the film was met with a positive critical and commercial reception upon its release.[174]

Gomez released her second studio album, Revival (2015), on October 9, 2015.[175] The album was met with a positive reaction from critics, who praised the album’s production and lyrical content.[176][177][178] The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, with first-week sales of 117,000 equivalent album units.[179] This remains Gomez’s highest first week sales to date.[179]Same Old Love” (2015) was released as the album’s second single, and went on to top the Mainstream Top 40 chart.[180][181] The single peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, tying with “Good for You” as her highest charting effort.[182]Hands to Myself” was the album’s third single, which became her third consecutive number one on the Mainstream Top 40 chart.[183] This made Gomez one of only six female artists to have three singles from the same album top the chart.[184] Gomez had a cameo role in the film The Big Short, which was released on December 11 by Paramount Pictures.[185] She was the musical guest on the January 23, 2016 episode of Saturday Night Live, with host Ronda Rousey.[186]

Gomez embarked on her worldwide Revival Tour (2016) on May 6.[187] Gomez claimed that the tour would focus solely on her as an artist, thus features less choreography and effects as her previous tour.[187] After touring in North America, Asia and Oceania, she cancelled the European and South America leg of the tour in August 2016 due to anxiety, panic attacks and depression caused by her lupus.[188] Gomez had a supporting role in the comedy film Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising; she portrayed the president of a sorority.[189] Her collaboration with Charlie Puth, “We Don’t Talk Anymore” (2016),[190] reached the top ten in the United States.[191] Gomez starred in the drama film The Fundamentals of Caring, alongside Paul Rudd,[192] which was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 29, 2016.[193] The film was released on June 24.[193] It was met with a mixed critical reception.[194] She also starred in In Dubious Battle with James Franco; the film was released on 3 September 2016.[195] Gomez has begun working on her third studio album while touring, and added a new song titled “Feel Me” to the setlist of her Revival Tour.[196] The song leaked online nine months after the first performance. [197]The album, which currently has no title or release date, will be her second release through Interscope Records.[196]

Following the cancellation of her tour, Gomez rechecked into rehab to focus on her mental health and was noticeably absent from social media.[198] She made her first public appearance at the 2016 American Music Awards,[199] where she was nominated for two awards for Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist and Artist of the Year. Artistry

Gomez is described as a pop singer,[207][208] showcasing the genre in form of dance-pop[208][209][210][211][212][excessive citations] and incorporating EDM[208][213] into her sound. She is also noted to feature prominent influences of Eurodance,[214][215] and her music has also been described as Europop.[216] As her career has been progressing, she has been experimenting with a large number of music genres. While her debut album with The Scene was inspired in electronic rock and pop rock,[217][218] her following records with the band opted for a more electropop-focused[219][220][221] and dance-pop[222][223] sound. A Year Without Rain noted a Eurodance feel and When the Sun Goes Down went into a more electro-disco– and teen pop-influenced musical direction.[224][225] Her debut solo record Stars Dance was rooted in the EDM-pop[226][227] genre, and Gomez herself described it as “baby dubstep“,[228] featuring elements from multiple genres as electronic, disco, techno or dancehall.[229][230] Her songs “The Heart Wants What It Wants” and “Good for You” have been described as “minimalistic” and “grown-up”,[231][232][233][234] transitioning her sound into adult pop.[235]

Early in her music career, Gomez named Bruno Mars as her main influence, saying that she was influenced in everything he does from “his style of music, his style in general, the way he performs, the way he carries himself.”[236] Gomez also cites Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Beyoncé and Rihanna as influences.[237][238][239][240] Gomez also stated that she finds English singer Cheryl Cole as a significant influence to her artistry, “She made me feel better, I just love her music and I think she’s a really nice person. She’s been through a lot, but she carries herself with a lot of class and I love that.”[241] Gomez’s debut solo album Stars Dance (2013) was prominently influenced by Spears, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, and American electronic producer Skrillex.[242] Her sophomore album, Revival (2015), was mainly influenced by Christina Aguilera’s album Stripped (2003) and singer Janet Jackson.[237][243]
